READERS DIGEST - THIS

CATCH 22 – Joseph Heller
If you have the appetite to read some “humor in uniform”, then this is the book which will satiate this hunger. Acclaimed for its humor, this book has a backdrop set to the world war. It portrays the frustration and absurdity prevalent during the war with a touch of humor.

SATANIC VERSES / MIGHTNIGHTS CHILDREN – Salman Rushdie
This man is no stranger, the Islam clergy had a death sentence put out on him for his book Satanic Verses. “NO OFFENSE INTENDED TO ANY PERSON AND/OR RELIGION” ... The plot is developed around the life of 2 guys, the only survivors of a hijacked plane.
The second book is about INDIA. He talks about Indian states like Jammu and Kashmir, Goa during the hippie days, the Jallianwala Bag tragedy, the Indira Gandhi government. It’s a brief walk through our history at the time of Independence.

EATS, LEAVES and SHOOTS – Lynne Truss
If your English Grammar sucks, you better read this book. It’s a crash course in grammar with a twist. The twist being: HUMOR.

STRAIGHT FROM THE GUTS – Jack Welch
Jack Welch, the man that brought GE the glory it not basks in. It’s a kind of an autobiography. He talks about how he revolutionized GE’s process and style of doing business.

IACOCCA, AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY – Lee Iacocco
Like me, not many might have heard of this man. He was a VP at Ford Motors. Designed the Mustang. Fired by Henry Ford. Picked up by Chrysler, at the time when it was on the brink of bankruptcy. And the hero saves the world. All car buffs will enjoy reading this book. He doesn’t dwell into the nitty gritties of car design and engineering but colors a beautiful picture of the automobile industry and throws a lot of shit at the “king” - Henry Ford.

I, ROBOT – Isaac Asimov
I don’t know what the movie was all about, but rest assured reading the book and watching the movie will make you wonder if the movie was really based on the book. If you have read “Man in the Iron Mask – Sir Alexander Dumas” or “War of the Worlds – H G Wells”, you will realize that the book and movie have very few plots in common. This book can be viewed as 6 incidences. Each involving robots and the blunder built around them and how humans, the more intelligent ones, solved them.

HITCH HICKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY – Douglas Adams
Another humorous book you should watch out for. An earthling and an alien hitch hiking their way through the universe after the earth was destroyed to make a way for a pathway.
Remember the college days when most of us hitch hicked to college and meet up with some real “characters”?

DILBERT, THE WAY OF THE WEASEL - Scott Adams
Just read it.

Soham: give me my colors. Looking forward to for some book reviews

Damn man. You are into some serious shit these days! Its 'Eats, Shoots and leaves'. If you liked that, you should try a parody of that book called 'Eats, Shites and leaves, by Antal Parody'. Its a humorous look at English idioms and usage.
About Iacocca, the book was amazing.
Didn't dig I, Robot as much as 2001, a Space Odessey. I think that was pure genius.
Hitch Hiker's Guide is a joy. I used to think of praying to Zaphod Beeblebrox during our engineering days.
Dilbert. No need to say anything. Though I feel, Weasel is the mildest of the books. Nothing beats The Principle, which I keep on my office desk. Also try Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook.

Catch 22, Straight from the Gut and Satanic verses were all great, and I am just not philosophically that sound to say anythign about them.

I am currently reading a book on Africa, and Kamala Subramaniam's Mahabharat. Glorious reads.

I just got started.

Another big name in writing is PG Woodhouse. He is the guy who fathers “Jeeves, the butler”. Pick up any thing by him and you will enjoy. He has some command over English. Though his stories are simple but he has a very polished vocabulary. Ideally, we should have read his books when we were “KIDS” … they are still fun to read.

“Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” … this is for all those “involved” … in a relationship. I don’t fancy this book, but some people find it to be an “INSPIRATION”.

MEIN KAMPF – Adolf Hitler
This is a 500 page book. I read 100 pages and threw it away. I found it difficult to comprehend. In these pages he tries to explain why he hated the Jews, I didn’t follow it and thought there was no point in continuing if you didn’t understand the basics of Nazism.

I haven’t given up on Hitler and the Third Reich just yet. Another guy I wish to read about is Che Guevara – he is a mirror image of Fidel Castro.

Anybody read “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”?

Well for all those who don’t wish to spent to much money on books but have been “INSPIRED” by this blogging, and wish to read some … check out this website “http://www.fictionbook.ru/en”. It’s a Russian website but has most of the books I have mentioned.

The “only” good aspect of Bangalore I have come to admire is the book stores. The pubs close by 11:00, transportation sucks and don’t even get me started on the weather. There are bookstore like “Blossom” and several others in every nook and corner which sell second hand books and Indian Reprints with an affordable price tag.

I hear you brother.
Bangalore has some amazing book stores. I used to frequent Premier near KC Das.
Also Strand, which is owned by Mr.Shanbag (also owns Premier). These bookstores give you great discounts. Of course, these are aprt from the standard favorites Gangarams and higginbothams which were weekend outings during my school days. You can also try lanes near ShivajiNagar and Majestic where people sell second hand books (some nearly new) at great prices.

About other aspects of B'lore. Buddy you have no idea what the place was about 10-15 years ago. heaven would be a close estimate. The climate was fantastic. I remember we got our first cieling fan in our house when I was in Class 9, as there were no needs of fans in the city. Now I guess one can't do without an AC.

I really feel sad the way the city has gone down the tube. People critricize Bihar, but I feel that the Karnataka govt is just as bad if not worse, the only difference being that they don't fuck up the place in the loud way they do in Laloo-land.
About trasport, I admit it sucks.
